6 Tips on Using Outlook Express 2007

After long thoughts, I decided to use Outlook Express 2007 for my GMail account, and I benefited a lot from it. Initially it was difficult for me to make out, which option was where, but slowly I was able to search for it, and started using it. Most of us don’t use Outlook Express, even if it is installed in our computers. However, after I started working on it, I was able to make lots of changes and make it more friendly to my nature of work. Here are these tips you can use

1. More Onscreen space - You can get more onscreen space by minimizing the navigation pane. This makes screen more clean and tidy. To do so, you need to click the arrow on top of the navigation pane, which then minimizes the navigation pane. It will get minimized to a sleek vertical bar, and all the icons like Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and more are available. However more number of shortcuts can be added and removed easily.



2. E-mail signature in Outlook - In GMail, you cannot have HTML signatures, but if you are using Outlook Express, you can have this feature as well. To create a HTML signature Go to the Tools –> Options –> Mail Format. There go to Signatures section and click new, and name it. Type in the desired email signature and apply HTML editing.
3. Colored Tasks - We know how important colors are in setting up the mood of a person. Colors are also important to let us know the importance, as we do the same in Tasks. When you add a task in calendar, right click on it and click “Categorize” and give the color category. You can add more colors, shortcuts to these colors, and also you can make a Quick Click feature which will add a task to that category whenever clicked.



4. Flag Mails - Flagging mails means that you want to read them later or take some action. Well in case you flag a message in Outlook Express, it will add this to your To-Do list immediately, and in case you want to change the day and date of action, that can be done as well with the follow up feature. Apart from that, a great feature wherein a Flag can be created for the recipients as well, where you need to give details when this mail needs to be taken action on. This mail will automatically be added in the To-Do list of that person. This works only if the recipient is also using Outlook Express.
5. Change the Font size of your message list - Sometimes you have to strain eyes to read email headers. Well we can change the font and size to make it easy for us. To do so click on the View –> Current View –> Customize Current View. Now click on Other Settings and Select Row Fonts and change the font to the one that you desire. Click OK, and it’s done.
6. Changing Reading Pane - In earlier versions of Outlook and Outlook Express, the reading pane used to be in different alignment, as it is now. Some people find the earlier version much easier to navigate, as I find the same . To change it, Go to View –> “Reading Pane” and select your view. You can turn it off as well. The best thing is that for every individual folder, the settings can be different. Also you can drag and adjust the height or width of the pane.

HOW?? Lets find that out.

1. Open Firefox and in the Address Bar type in “about:config”, without Quotes
2. In the filter box type in Network, and scroll down to find “Network.HTTP.Pipelining”.
3. Change the value to “True” by double clicking on that.
4. Also just below that “Network.HTTP.pipelining.maxrequests”, change its value from 4 to 10

Fasten Brodband using Firefox
5. Click OK, and quit Firefox, reopen it and you would be able to see the difference

If you are using windows 98, then you might need to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Task Manager And Msconfig Disappear When Opened

I have been observing many systems that are hit by viruses and as a result either the system utilities like task manager and the registry editor are disabled or they are made hidden. They just open and disappear in a flash. This behavior is caused if your system is infected with viruses. What would be the easiest way to counter this problem? This question has been in my mind since I started troubleshooting these types of problems. Because in these types of situations, nothing seems to be working and the person is totally helpless. I have found out that backing up these utilities in a safe place will save you loads of work when a virus attack

occurs because the virus, by default, will only attack those utilities in their default location and if we have a backup of those utilities, we can easily run those without any errors. So I have just made a package of these essential system utilities which can be downloaded from the link below.

Note: The cursor moves very slow but you can speed it up. By pressing ALT+Shift+Num Lock you will see a dialogue click on settings again click settings, and then select Hold down Ctrl to speed up and Shift slow down. Now when you want to move cursor then hold Ctrl and then press any key to move the cursor through numeric keypad. It will speed up now.

Work without Keyboard

Start–>RUN

Type osk and you will see this keyboard called On-Screen Keyboard. To use any key press Click on any key. Usually this utility is made for mobility impaired users. But you use it if any of your key is not working at a moment.

And the biggest disadvantage of Microsoft Windows is the registry itself :-). Huh .. if the registry is corrupt, who will pay for it? .. because if the registry is corrupt, everything is gone.

I like tweaking Windows registry to get the desired results as we can type any command in Linux to get our desired results. Anyway, today we are going to edit the recently typed URLs history in the Internet Explorer. Let me elaborate it through the screen shot.

There are several methods to edit this URLs history. One of them is from

the registry. So let us do it from the registry first.

Editing Via Registry

Open your registry editor
Go to Start –> Run –> regedit

Find the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs

When you reach the key, you can see all your recently typed URLs in the right hand pane. You can double click any of them to edit them.

If you want to create a new item, right click the empty space in the right hand pane and select New –> String Value

If there are three existing keys, name the newly created key as url4. You only have to go sequentially, meaning that see the last value of the keys in the right hand pane and increment it by one and name your newly created key appropriately.

If you want to delete an existing key, just right click it and select delete.

How To Remove The ntde1ect.com and autorun.inf Files

There is a Trojan/virus (either the Win32/Pacex virus or the Win32/PSW.Agent.NDP trojan) that uses the two files ntde1ect.com and autorun.inf. Here is how you can get rid of them :

• Open Task Manager and in Processes tab end explorer.exe and wscript.exe process
• Open up File –> New Task (Run) in the Task manager
• Type cmd and hit Enter
• Type
• del /a:h /f c:\autorun.*
• Go to your Windows\System32 directory by typing cd c:\windows\system32
• Type dir /a:h /f avp*.*
• If you see any files names avpo.dll or avpo.exe or avpo.exe, use the
• Del /a:h /f avpo.exe
• Open up File –> New Task (Run) in the Task manager, Type regedit
• Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
• If there are any entries for avpo.exe, delete them.
• Do a complete search of your registry for ntdelect.com and delete any entries you find.
• To Restore Folder Options Settings, Navigate to
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL

"Registry editor had been disabled"-How to enable registry again

1- From Group Policy Editor

Go to Run –> gpedit.msc
In the left hand menu, go to User Config –> Administrative Templated –> System.

Now In the right hand pane, select “Prevent access to registry editing tools”. It will probably be not configured or enabled. If it’s enabled, disable it and if it’s not configured, first enable it, apply settings and then disable it. Most probably the settings have been applied instantly. If not, then run gpupdate in command prompt to apply the group policies.

2- From the Run Menu

I got this tweak while surfing the internet. Go to Start –> Run, copy and paste the follow in the Run box and press OK.

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

The effects are usually instant. If not then you should see the results after restarting your computer.

Enable and then Disable “Removes Folder Options menu from Tools menu“

Orkut Apps Finally Launched in India

We had a clue that Orkut Apps will be launched in India this week, but surprises have their own impact. Yes, today Orkut Apps have been launched Here in India, after Estonia. Earlier I changed my country to Estonia so as to explore more of these Apps, but now, I can come back to India .

There are 18 Apps currently available, of which I was not able to explore any one fully. I just ran to an overview, but seems like people in my contact have already starting using it . As soon as you use these Apps, these go into the updates, and your friends are informed about it, if your “update friends” options is enabled. Apart from that, your profile to changes, and all the Apps are added in your profiles main page, which make it quite messy and long for a page.
Anyways, you can add your Apps from the Apps section (New addition) in the left pane.
Ultimately this is going to be great Orkutting experience, and I am pretty sure that all Indians are now going to spend more time on Orkut.

Adding a Port Or Program In Windows Xp SP2 Firewall

f you are using Windows Xp SP2, and your firewall is Enabled, then sometimes you must have faced a problem of blocked sites, and firewall doesn’t allow you further to access it. Same happens with some of the softwares like SKYPE. Also some sites require some specific ports to be opened so as to transmit data. What in that case can you do. Well the simple thing is to add Ports. Let’s see how to make changes.

1. Go to Start –> Run, type firewall.cpl.
2. Click on Exception Tab, and untick the service you are not able to use. After you save changes you will be able to use those Softwares
3. Sometimes you might not see a particular software in that list. In that case Click Add Program button.
4. List of all the Installed softwares is shown and you need to select your service to add it up and activate it.
5. In case of opening a port, Click Add Port and give any name and the port numbers you want to add.

That’s it, you are done with editing your firewall. In future if you face any problem with Windows firewall, remember its very easy to edit with. Even if you play with it, it can be repaired, but don’t play too much .

Unable to Use “Add or Remove Programs”?

Its readers query time, Again. This time an anonymous mail came to me, which said, “Hello Pawan, My add and remove function is not working, I am not able to uninstall and install any of the programs, what can be problem, and the solution to this.”

Well, this person was definitely facing problem as he was not able to uninstall any of the programs. A simple registry tweak should help him out, as he used a disposable Email ID, so I was not able to contact him. This registry tweak was tried on windows Xp, and worked fine.
Here is what this Anonymous person needs to do.

1. Go to Start –> Run, and type Regedit
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Uninstall
3. On the right pane, look for DWord NoAddRemovePrograms
4. Change its value to “0” to disable it
5. If you don’t see this DWord you can create it as well, because when it is not created, it means it is not defined. So its always better to define it.

Using Auto Summerize Feature in Word 2007

While creating a project report, you need to have a Executive summary in the beginning. Well, that is all fine, but can you really create a summary within 10 minutes. Actually NO, and especially when you are having long reports of around 50 to 80 pages. For the last two days, I was in a complete mess over what to include and what not to include in the Executive summary of my project. Then one of our faculties helped me out when I saw them using Auto Summarize feature in Word 2003. Well, to my greatest knowledge, I didn’t have any clue that this is even possible. This tool is not shown in word 2007 in any of the tabs, and the worst part that it doesn’t even show in Help. But here is a way you can add the Auto Summarize button, and use this feature.

1. Go to Office button –> Word Options.
2. Go to Customize section, and then choose All commands
3. Then look for the Auto Summary tools, add it in the Quick Access Toolbar

Now you can use this feature. This little tool has great features. It allows you to create summary in different formats.
You can either highlight the key points, create an Executive summary, create a new document and put summery there, or within the same document. You can also decide upon what percentage of document to show as a summary. This function really works great. It skips some important points you might feel would have been included, but thats fine, it works that way .

Disabling Recent Files in Office 2007

By default, Word 2007 displays the last 17 documents that have been opened. Some users, like me, likes to increase this limit, but some use to reduce this limit to 0 and making the recent documents disabled. The number of recent can be increased or decreased, from 0 to 50. Disabling the number of recent documents in Word 2007 wont reduce the number of recent documents in Excel or PowerPoint. You need to go in every application to change this setting.

Follow these steps to perform the same.

1. Click On Office Button.
   
2. Go to Word Options.
   
3. Go to the Advanced tab, and look for Display section.
   
4. Look for "Show this number of Recent Documents" and fill your desired value from 0 to 50.
   

Click OK, and you are done with it.

Minimizing the Office 2007 Ribbon

For those of you who are working with low resolution of 1024X768, or below, you must have felt the need of more space while using office 2007. When I work in my college with same resolution, I always want to get more space, specially while using Powerpoint. Now, some more space can be added by minimizing the ribbon, and thus hiding all the buttons which are expanded. This came to me accidentally when I double click on the ribbon, and the ribbon minimized. (These kind of accidents are good )

This can be minimized either by double click on the tabs names, or right click on then and then choose "Minimize the Ribbon". After the ribbon is minimized, to access the options in each tab, single click them, and after the work is done, it auto hides. Double click it back, and you will see the expanded tabs once again.

Do try this simple trick, if you face space problem.

Fasten BroadBand using Firefox

Firefox users already access internet at much faster as what Internet explorer will help you do that. Now there is a way to increase the speed at which you are accessing internet in Firefox only.
HOW?? Lets find that out.

1. Open Firefox and in the Address Bar type in “about:config”, without Quotes
2. In the filter box type in Network, and scroll down to find “Network.HTTP.Pipelining”.
3. Change the value to “True” by double clicking on that.
4. Also just below that “Network.HTTP.pipelining.maxrequests”, change its value from 4 to 10



5. Click OK, and quit Firefox, reopen it and you would be able to see the difference

If you are using windows 98, then you might need to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Change the Default folder in Windows Explorer

Whenever you open Windows Explorer you would see it opening in My Documents, and you need to go all the way to your folder. If you want to get the folder of your choice at the very start of Explorer, then you just need to make some changes in its properties. Here’s what you need to do.

1. Go to Start –> Programs –> Accessories –> Right Click on Windows Explorer and choose Properties.
2. Go to the Shortcut tab and then into the target, add the line ” /n, /e, /select, C:\”, without Quotes, Now your target should look like this.

3. Instead of “C:\” you can type the path of your folder and whenever you will open Explorer, it will come up with your Folder.

Now, If you are using Pre Windows XP, then you can access Windows Explorer by Shortcut “Windows Logo + E”, but in case of Windows XP this shortcut is already defined to give you the explorer window with selection as My Computer. In Xp you need to open it by going into start menu, or you can create a shortcut as well.

Installing Windows in Unattended Mode

Formating your System and Reinstalling Windows is a pretty boring and long work. Now how to make it working. You can format your Hard Drive in a matter of minutes but Installation of Windows is long and boring, Especially when you have to sit in front of computer as setup is running and a window comes up, asking for the information.
Well to overcome this a method called Unattended Installation was provided by Microsoft as in case to get rid of it.
Now, How to do this Unattended Installation?
Here is the solution, Lets see it How.

Follow these steps before Formating your computer or onto another computer.

1. Insert your Windows Xp/2K3 disk into your computer and open the CD drive.
2. Open the Support folder, then tools. And then open the deploy(archive) file, you might need Winzip to open that file.
3. Now in that folder, run file “setupmgr.exe”. It will display Wizard.
4. Click next and select “Create New”. Select “unattended installation”, click next, then select the OS, click next. Select “fully automated”, click next.
5. After that wizard will now ask you all the questions that are asked by setup during installation.

8. In floppy disk you should see 2 files, winnt.sif and winnt.bat, if not go through the whole process again.
9. Your Files are now ready1. When you will start the installation it will automatically take all the files from the file. Now you can install Windows Xp/2k3 into any computer.

So, next time you Install Windows, Do use this to save your time.

Does Your Drive Not Open on Double Click

One of our readers Manish mailed me and asked a question. “Whenever I double click on my D drive, it does not open. It shows me a find window and i am not able to access it. I am not able to access any type of data, What can be done.”
On Further probing, I came to know that whenever he double clicks, Find window opens up, and this was no result of a Virus attack, it was just playing with the Folder Options, which resulted in this situation.
He was able to see the “Find” option as the main option in bold, and also able to open drives through right click options. When I checked it, I saw that the Registry gets edited when we do the changes as Manish did.
Here is the solution to Manish’s Problem

1. Go to Start –> Run, Type Regedit
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Drive\shell
3. In the Right pane, Change the Only value there “Default” to “None“

This Solved the issue. If you are facing this problem too, you can try this and thus get your problem solved.

Open Explorer to the Directory you want

If you want to create a shortcut that will open the desired folder in explorer, then here is a small trick for you all. Just by including the path, this can be achieved.

1. Right click on Desktop, and go to New –> Shortcut
2. On the shortcut location type in “%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, C:/TechiesDen“

3. Here C:/TechiesDen is the destination folder, you can type in your folder path name here.

Creating Word 2007 Templates

If you are a person who frequently create documents that requires lots of formatting to be done, then here is a simple solution which can save your time. You can create Word templates, that contains all the special formatting that needs to be done. You can then use this template every time you work, and thus saving time and energy on formatting.

You can include the Font, Size, Spacing and Date and Time as well, which will be updates each time the template is opened.
You can add, Headers and Footers, text, and their styling.
If you are a student like me, you can add a front page, that shows your name and other details you want to show.
Other big thing that can be added is the Macros.

In the end, just save this file as a Word Template file, which are saved in “.dot” format
Now every time you open, you will see the same formatting.

Shutdown Your Computer Within Seconds

If you want to shut down your computer in a hurry, or if a frozen application that prevents you from shutting down in the normal ways, then you can use the following procedure to Shutdown your computer.
This method is absolutely safe, but you won’t get even a single opportunity to save your open documents.

* To perform this emergency shutdown, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to display Task Manager.
* Open the “Shut Down” menu and hold down the Ctrl key and click Turn Off. Poof! your system is Off within Seconds. You don’t even get a second thought to think upon.

Hide The Last User Who Logged On

If your computer is used by more than one user, then you might be using the old NT way to login. One of the major drawbacks with this structure is that a person can identify the last user who logged on to the computer. Now in Windows if you are the administrator, you can hide the last person who logged on your computer. These are again changing the policies of your computer. Here is the process

1. Go to Start –> Run –> gpedit.msc
2. Go to Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Options.
3. Look for Interactive Logon : Do not display last username, and enable that option.
4. Next time when you will logon, you will see the User and Password fields as blank.

This tip is useful in case you don’t want others to know that who else used this computer, and if in case you want to know who used it, then you might not like to use it.

Disable The Auto Complete Feature In Internet Explorer

Are you the only one to use your computer? What if you need to share your computer for even few minutes to another person. He might just access his mail and also get to know some information through Auto Complete forms that you don't want to share. In that case what can you do?
Giving him a different web browser is a good option, but what if you use only I.E.? Then in that case you need to disable the Auto Complete Feature. Just follow these simple steps to do the same.

1. Open I.E., and go to Tools and Internet Options.
2. Go to the Contents tab and further go to Auto Complete option.
3. Now choose from the variety of options given, Select the options for which you want to use this feature.

4. Apart from that if you want to delete the Form data then go to General tab, Click delete in Browsing History and then click Delete forms. This will delete all the saved information for the forms.

This can be useful otherwise as well. If you have anything more to say, Do Comment.

Boot Into Xp With Non GUI Boot

If in case you don’t want to see the Windows Xp’s boot logo, then in that case you can disable it and your system will boot into Xp in Non GUI. This will make the booting of Windows a bit faster, but wont have a big effect. Here’s what you need to do.

1. Go to Start –> Run and type “msconfig”.
2. Go to the boot.ini tab, and select you Operating System, in case you are using multiple OS’s on a single system.
3. Tick /NOGUIBOOT, and apply it. Reboot your system, and you will feel the difference.

Hiding User Accounts On Logon Screen In Xp

If you are using multiple accounts on a same computer and using the new way to Logon, then sometimes you may have felt to hide some of the accounts, as they might be important for you but you use them very often, and don’t want computer to show them all. We do sometimes create some accounts for testing purpose as well. Lets see how to just hide them rather then deleting it and recreating it again.

1. Go to Start –> Run and type regedit.
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList
3. There Right click on Userlist, and create a New DWORD value.
4. Name the value as the Account name, and give its value as 0. This will make sure that your account is now hidden.
5. If you want to unhide it back, then just change the value from 0 to 1, this will unhide the account.

Changing the Default Windows Search Settings

We usually never give a thought of changing the settings for the Windows Search. Changing the settings is easy, to do this just click Change Preferences. From here you can change the Animated character, you can remove it, change the file, folder search behavior and much more. I am using Windows Xp SP2 and options might differ from version to version. Lets see them.

• Without An Animated Character : You can actually search without that animated character as well, you can remove him if it irritates you.
• With A Different Character : You can even change the character if you want. Options available are Rover - the Dog, The Dot, F1, Office Logo, Mother Nature, Links - the Cat, Rocky - the Dog, Merlin - The Magician, Courtney and Earl. Choose from these.
• Indexing Services : This should be enabled, it makes faster for your computer to make searches, and not only that, it will also speed up the process of data fetching. In some cases, when your system is idle, it may become slow to react as when your system is idle, then system starts indexing your files.
• Change File and Folder Search Behavior : This is a good option which should be set to as Advanced level. By this it would be easy for you to make searches within your computer. If you are comfortable with the technical stuff, then you must select the Advanced level.
• Internet Search Behavior : Here you can choose any of them, we don’t use it much, and I suppose some of us don’t use it at all.
• Balloon Tips : These tips are given during the search results to make things better and simpler for you. You can opt for it, as you might get any new stuff to learn.
• Auto Complete : You can turf On/Off the auto complete feature.

These were the preferences you can change. People today are so organized that they don’t feel the need for searching their files and folders. But yet it’s a very important tool.

Some File And Folder Setting Tweaks

We all work with files and folders and we are well aware of all the aspect of it. Still there are some characteristics of files and folders that some of us are unaware of. Here are few tweaks I want to share with you all.

1. Rename Multiple files : To rename several files at a single go, select all the files (Ctrl + A) and right click on a file, and rename it. The other files will also follow the same, they will be renamed and distinguished by numbers at the end of the renamed file.
2. Remove the Filename : To remove filename in your folder in the Thumbnail view, Just hold the Shift key and select the Thumbnail view for your folder, this will remove the filename for your folder, but for thumbnail view only, rest all other type of views will remain unaffected. Removing the filename will give you some more space to show your files.
3. Grouping Files : You can try grouping your files as well. Grouping files in Alphabetical order can help you if you get lots of files. I use it to manage my notes. To group your files, Right click in your folder, Arrange Icon by, and select Show in groups. This will enable the grouping of files.

Disable Windows Tour In Xp

When you install Windows Xp Home or Professional Editions, then the first thing you observe is the Windows Tour. This keeps on popping up again and again till you complete the tour.
Windows Tour is a service which was developed so as to make people comfortable with Xp as the interface provided had some new features. But this became a bit of a pain when we were not able to stop it at any point of time. Hiding it in the notification area didn’t help too much. This tour was then taken off in Windows Xp SP1 and SP2. But in case if you are still using the Xp home or Professional editions then you can try to disable it using the Registry Settings. Before performing this make sure you backup your registry.
Here is what you need to do.

1. Go to Start –> Run, and type “regedit“.
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Tour
3. Right Click on Tour and create a new DWORD value.
4. Name the value as RunCount and give its value as 0.

This was the registry setting which i found was existent in Windows Xp SP1 and SP2 versions, and creating them in the earlier versions of it help in stopping the Windows Tour.

Setting The Caps Lock, Num Lock And Scroll Lock Status

Setting up the Caps Lock, Num Lock and the Scroll Lock is much required sometimes. If the settings go bad, they can be create mess sometimes. Thankfully, these can be changed easily by changing some Registry values, and thus using it up to your needs.
To Set up the Startup of these keys, just follow the instructions below to get the desired results.

Before Performing this task, take a backup of your registry, so as in case if anything goes wrong, you would be able to recover it back.

1. Go to Start –> Run and type “Regedit”.
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard.
3. Select the String InitialKeyboardIndicators.
4. Now we need to change the String Value to get the desired result. Give the values as given below.
   • For All Keys off - 0
   • For Caps Lock on - 1
   • For Num Lock on - 2
   • For Caps Lock and Num Lock on - 3
   • For Scroll Lock on - 4
   • For Caps Lock and Scroll Lock on - 5
   • For Num Lock and Scroll Lock on - 6
   • For All Keys on - 7
5. Reboot your Computer and its Done

Its that easy, You can do it with ease. But just make sure you go the specified String and put the specified Value only. Please do not attempt to do if you are comfortable with the Registry. Use any Registry Editing Software for make any changes.

Either we keep on burning onto disk or we need to delete the data. So the best solution today is to get a bigger and better hard disk drive for your computer. What are those things which you must look for before buying a hard disk drive?

Storage space required :-
Decide the storage space required but buy the drive of more storage space then your requirements. If you require 160 GB storage space, then go for 250 GB storage drive. This is necessary as in future there is a high probability of getting more data then you think of.

Which Brand to go for?
Mainly there are two famous brands as in Nehru Place (Delhi) Seagate and Samsung. Other companies include Maxtor, Western Digital and Hitachi. These can be looked at as well. But the hot selling ones with reliable service and warranty are Seagate and Samsung only.

Speed of Disk :-
You need to look for the speed of drive, 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm, more the speed, better is the read and write operations. This doesn’t have great effects on the price. But speed is one of the factors in differentiating a model from another.

Always look for the warranty issue. We usually leave this part, but in case of a crash, the service they give is what it matters. Samsung gives you a good service, but Seagate does this too, but the only flaw I heard in Nehru Place about Seagate is that they do not remove the Bad sectors from the drive, they just hide them. Can’t say how far this thing is true.

Take a look at what all software’s are being provided by the company. These include software like Disk Manger, Disk Partition, Disk clean up, Disk Defragmentation and others. These software do help in managing and keeping your drive alive for longer period.

Also, you will come across certain terms which you might not be aware of. Cache, SATA, Platter and many other. You need not to think about it. All the drives available today have almost same specifications, but the only difference is how they mange those.

This is the list which you must look for. If i am missing on anything do remind me.

P.S. – SATA stands for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment, and every computer might not support the SATA drives, as it’s a new version of the conventional system PATA. Do confirm it from your vendor.

Enable/Disable Your Task Manager

Well, this situation might never arise when you need to Disable your Task manager. But more commonly it happens because of a virus attack. Viruses do disable the Task Manager. Now they do so by editing the Registry values. Even if you remove the viruses, the registry changes will remain and thy will continue to effect your system, until you correct them. This is easy and I will let you know how this can be done with just a small change in Registry. Here’s what you need to do.

1. Go to Start –> Run, and open Regedit.
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
3. If you are infected by a Virus then you will see a Dword Value “DisableTaskMgr“, if not, then create this new value.
4. To Enable it, give a value of “0“, and to Disable it, give it a value of “1“

This is a very simple method by which Task manager can be Enabled/ Disabled. Apart from that, if you are in a network, and want to disable Task manager for a user, then you need to change the Computer Policies.

Disable Password Expiration

If you using Windows, you must have faced the issue of password expiration. Specially in Xp where it says “Your Password Will Expire In 14 Days”. There is a simple way through you can disable the password expiration feature, and the password for the user never expires. There are simple changes to be made in the user properties to do so. Apart from that, make sure that if you are in a network, you must have the proper permissions to do so. Follow the steps below

1. Right Click on My Computer and click Manage.
2. Select Local users and groups and further select Users.
3. Select the user you want and open its Properties.
4. Tick Password Never Expires, and you are done with it.

If you are using Windows 2003, then for doing the same for multiple users, you can select multiple users, but in case of XP, multiple users Properties cannot be edited.
If yuo want to apply for all the users then simple type net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited on Run and all the users will now be set to Password Never Expires.

Editing The Right Click Menu

When you install any software then they add themselves to the right click menu. This slows down the system as well, as it needs to get all the files ready when you right click. Especially the software like WinRar, which add lots of option to your Right Click menu. We don’t require all, and we require some options for some kind of files, so we can remove many options to make our menu open faster. This can be done through Registry editing. Here is the Registry Setting.

1. 1. Go to Run and type in Regedit.
2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers, This is the where programs attach to right click menu, This is a universal right click. To make the specific right clicks, you need to go to specific type of file in this section.
3. You simply delete the keys you do not want.

This is one of the ways to edit the Right Click Menu. Another way to do this is to use editing software with which things can be done with much ease and in detailed manner. File Menu Tools is a tool which will do this for you.

Through this software you can add more options provided by the software, and you can remove the contents you want. The only thing is that you should know which files to look for and editing which file will make the correct changes. It also allows you do edit the “Send To” menu.
